Little Boy Pepper Flynt Busbee, 8 years old, hails born in O’Hare in California. His father James has a strong bond with Pepper. He is holding his child in his arms, and begins to realize the size of his face. Pepper sought advice from a doctor regarding the issue of dwarfism. The doctor told him that the boy was an “little boy” and that would become the nickname of Pepper. Pepper would eventually become averse to these words and would forever be irritated when someone pointed out his name.
However, his older brother, who has with flat feet is deemed ineligible for military service, and his father is forced to join him to fill in for him. Pepper then hears the Bible verse “Truly I say to that if you have faith as small as like a mustard seed, then this mountain will be moved from where it is to'” (Matthew 17.20). Pepper is determined to build enough faith to allow his father back to his home. But his mentor and close friend Father Oliver tells Pepper that faith is useless for anyone who harbors hatred. While he initially isn’t happy with the anti Japanese attitude Pepper is exposed to – which is now a regular feature in the society, Pepper learns to respect their friendship and confront the bullies who scold him for his size. Father Oliver provided Pepper an outline of the tasks to be completed. Pepper’s father is missing in the action and his mother Emily Watson struggles to keep her family together despite the difficult circumstances. London and his brother and Sam who is one of the residents who lost a son visit Hashimoto’s home and assault him in the evening which leads to him being admitted to a hospital. London is initially detained however, Hashimoto is unable to pursue charges. Then, he is released.
An official from the Army announces that Pepper’s father has been murdered. The deceased is being buried in the Philippines. Hashimoto is at the O’Hare Cemetery memorial service to pay respects to his father. Pepper and Hashimoto discuss their losses together and believe in something. Pepper goes back to the cemetery to view the gravesite of his father, and to put the list at the top of the monument. Pepper brings his mother to see a doctor. Dr. Fox attempts to flirt with Pepper and invites him to his home to discuss Pepper’s diminutive size.
A spokesperson from the Army came later to inform her that her husband hadn’t passed away. The father of Pepper had taken his boots and affixing the dog tags of his pet to the boots. He was shot by shot, and was mistakenly identified as Pepper’s father. Pepper takes James to the hospital along with his family. James had been contemplating the boots for a long time and Pepper purchased the boots for James. They find out that James suffers from mild amnesia following suffering an injury to the head. Pepper introduces James as his “partner” and presents him with the present. James is holding the boot, and then kisses the faces of Pepper and his family. When they return him to O’Hare the entire family gathers around the table and embrace each other.
